News From the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy® Awards

Airdate: 9/21/2009
The brightest stars of the small screen were out and shining on TV's biggest night.  Hollywood A-listers sizzled on the red carpet…literally! When asked how she was staying cool, Vanessa Williams said “I'm not, I’m about to explode in a second.”  With temperatures soaring above 100 degrees, glamorous celebrities were spotted everywhere using portable fans and toweling off.

Christina Applegate had a secret weapon to keep her looking gorgeous in the sweltering sun.  “My boyfriend keeps patting me down every time I turn around,” she said.  And Charlie Sheen was in awe of his wife Brooke's ability to stay so cool.  He looked at his wife and said, "She's comfortable, [but] I'm sweating like a bridegroom!"

Stunning in silver, Mariska Hargitay says she's happy and healthy after recovering from a partially collapsed lung. “It's been quite a year for you,” says INSIDE EDITION’S Deborah Norville. “A big year, but I’m happy to be here.  I’m overwhelmed and just thrilled and grateful,” says Mariska.

It was date night for nominee Heidi Klum and her husband Seal, who snapped pictures of his extremely pregnant supermodel wife.

When Norville asked Klum, “What is it like to walk the red carpet when [you're] a month away from having a baby?”

“I love that I don’t have to suck my stomach in. I love that I can let it all hang out,” admitted Klum.

Meanwhile, golden girl Jamie-Lynn Sigler walked the red carpet for the first time with her on-and-off-screen love, Entourage star Jerry Ferrera.  “My date is a very talented man named Jerry,” said Sigler.

Norville asked Ferrera, “Is it fun to come to one of these things together?”

“Yeah, it’s always fun. Anytime I’m with her, I’m having a good time, so I’d rather have her with me,” he said.

And funnyman Steve Carell celebrated his fourth Emmy nomination with his witty wife. INSIDE EDITION’S Jim Moret said Nancy Carell, "He must have a big head by now."  Without missing a beat she replied, "He's always had one!"

Desperate Housewives actress Dana Delany was looking forward to presenting the award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series and was rooting for one of the hunky nominees to win.

“I secretly hope Jon Hamm wins for best dramatic actor, because I want to kiss him!” she said.

Kristin Chenoweth beamed on the red carpet and said, “I’m just happy to be here.  I love my dress!”  Later, she dissolved into tears while picking up the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.  “I don’t know why I'm crying,” she said on stage.  But there was medical drama for the star moments after her big win.  Paramedics had to examine her backstage because she was suffering from a painful migraine.

The night’s other big winners included Glenn Close, who was thrilled to take home an Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for the second year in a row.

Jim Moret was backstage with Jeff Probst, who just started his 19th season of Survivor and picked up his second Emmy.  Probst said, “It’s fun talking to you, I watch you and now I’m talking to you and I have an Emmy…it’s a great little moment.”

Two and a Half Men's Jon Cryer still looked stunned backstage holding his Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. “It’s amazing. I have no explanation. It was an amazing group of nominees this year, so I didn't think I had a prayer.”  Moret teased Cryer, saying, “Kanye West was actually going to come up and say you didn’t deserve the award."  “I was looking for Kanye. I think everyone tonight was looking for Kanye!” said Cryer.

And AMC's Mad Men and NBC’s 30 Rock again both won top honors, taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Drama Series and Comedy Series respectively.
