The 27-year-old beauty queen was still in the closet when she finished in the top ten, competing as Miss Kentucky in the 2011 Miss America Pageant.
She said it was the political battle over gay marriage in her home state that led her to come out, making her the first openly lesbian pageant contestant ever to compete on a national level.
For her talent, Djuan sang a song appropriately titled, "A Change is Gonna Come."
Djuan told INSIDE EDITION, "This definitely has been liberating for me. I, for a long time have been stuck in that awkward stage of using non-descript pronouns. People ask me about my boyfriend and me just saying ‘no’ and just leaving it at that.”
Djuan said she has absolutely no regrets about coming out, saying, "I no longer have to feel that I’m lying to myself or to those around me."
