The calf learned to swim just a day after being born!
A hippopotamus was born at the San Diego Zoo on Monday and the little calf is already learning how to swim just a day later!
Zoo officials haven’t named the baby yet because it is too early to determine the sex of the calf.
The baby hippo will typically nurse for eight months so he will be staying close to his mom, Funani. The zoo reports that both mother and child are doing well and animal care staff have observed the calf nursing from Funani several times after the birth.
The mama hippo has birthed 11 calves since 1989, five of which were born at the San Diego Zoo.
Funani was separated from the the calf’s father, Otis, two weeks ago in anticipation of the birth.
