More gruesome details have surfaced in the Petit family murder trial, including surveillance video of accused killer Steven Hayes buying gasoline that he used to burn down the family's home. INSIDE EDITION has the story.
It's a monster at the pump. Just released surveillance images show accused killer Steven Hayes buying gas he used to torch a home and kill a mom and her two daughters.
Jennifer Hawke Petit, 11-year-old Michaela and 17-year-old Hayley were all murdered. Their father, Dr. William Petit was the sole survivor of a savage night of horrors.
The gas station manager said Hayes was cold and emotionless when he bought the gasoline.
Reporters asked, "What do you see when you look at that surveillance tape?"
"My skin crawls. My skin crawls now," said the attendant.
Two hours after buying the gas, Hayes drove Jennifer Hawke Petit to a bank to withdraw $15,000.
There was distressing testimony about the rape and murder of little 11-year-old Michaela and her mom.
Alaine Griffin of the Hartford Courant said, "It was very chilling because it's the first time that it was ever discussed publicly."
It was a day of high drama in the courtroom as the chief medical examiner was about to take the stand, Dr Petit actually decided to walk out to avoid hearing the graphic testimony. He was ashen-faced when he left the court.
Dr. Petit said to reporters, "It was another tough and painful day for the Hawke and Petit families. I think everybody saw that who listened to the testimony."
Handwritten notes of the police interrogation that are signed by Steven Hayes read:
"Don't care what I have to do, I need money. What would I be willing to do? Anything."
Just hours before the home invasion, Hayes sent his accused accomplice Josh Komisarjevsy this chilling text:
"I'm chomping at the bit to get started. Dude, the horses wanna get loose. Laughing out loud. "
"Anybody in that room hearing about this crime is beginning to understand just how savage it really was," said Griffin.
