Gito was hairless, severely dehydrated, malnourished and suffering from mange when he was found in Indonesia. Now he is on the mend.
A baby orangutan who was found dumped in a cardboard box in Indonesia is now recovering thanks to his kind-hearted rescuers.
Gito was hairless, severely dehydrated, malnourished and suffering from mange when he was found, and he looked so sick that his rescuers didn't even know if he was alive.
"His arms were folded corpse-like across his tiny body and he looked almost mummified in his cardboard coffin," International Animal Rescue said on its website.
"Gito had barely any hair on his body and his skin was grey and flaking from a highly contagious parasitic skin infection. The constant itching and pain must have been excruciating."
But after International Animal Rescue brought him to their clinic in West Borneo, the three-month-old orangutan slowly began recovering.
After just a week, he is showing incredible improvements and is drinking on his own from a bottle. His eyes are no longer swollen and he is able to move around, but rescuers are still applying coconut oil to his skin every day.
Staff say he was probably taken from his mother and kept as a pet before he was thrown away. They say it's still too early to tell if he'll have any long term physical damage.

"There is a long way to go for poor Gito," IAR said on YouTube. "Once Gito is stronger, our vets will be able to get a fuller picture of his condition."
