She went on to achieve greatness in other ways by graduating prestigious Stanford University and getting a degree in engineering and becoming an orthopedic surgeon after graduating from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

The twice divorced Olympic great says she has been a victim of domestic abuse at the hands of her current fiancé, Jamie Looney.
INSIDE EDITION’s Megan Alexander asked him: "Jamie, did you abuse Debbie?"
He said: "Yes I did. She abused me. I abused her."
She also admitted: "I punched him in the face."
They both say the abuse has ended and Debi even praised him: “Jamie is a great man; he's got a sweet heart."
Much of the online reaction to Debi’s situation has been harsh.
"...was watching Debi Thomas...it's gotta be mental illness,” one comment said.
"It’s clear Debi Thomas has mental health issues,” was another.
Alexander asked her: "Where is your family now?"
"They are totally embarrassed for sure," she said.
