If she is found to have been sane at the time of the killings, she could be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, the Associated Press reported. If she is determined to have been insane, she will go to a state mental hospital.
Her attorney said that during the sanity phase of the trial, which begins on Tuesday, doctors will testify that she may have suffered from postpartum psychosis.
The three girls were found by their grandmother on May 20, 2014. Investigators arrived to find the children lying in a pool of blood on a bed with their mother, who was naked, KTLA reported.
Prosecutors say Coronado slit their throats and stabbed them in their chests before leaving their bodies neatly laid out on her bed for her husband to find. They say she had also planned to kill her husband but her mother stopped her by grabbing the knife from her hand.
When her mother and husband returned to the house, Coronado used the knife to stab herself.
Prosecutor Emily Spear said on Monday that Coronado had killed the children to get back at her husband, who wanted a divorce, and because she was overwhelmed with taking care of them, according to the Daily Breeze.
On the day of the killings, one of the girls had a "potty accident," which may have been the final straw, Spear said.
"She has a clear motive," Spear said. "She hurt (her husband) the only way she can. She takes out his children."

Coronado's attorney, Stephen Allen, said: "She truly needed help and no one was there to help her."
Outside court on Monday, Coronado's husband, Rudy, said he believes she wasn't sane at the time.
"She lost her mind. She lost her mind," he told the Daily Breeze. "It tears me apart because it's my little girls that I lost. I lost my whole family, my three little girls. And Carol, she didn't mean to do that. I strongly believe that."
Following the deaths, he set up The 3 Coronado Angels Foundation to raise awareness of postpartum depression.
"I believe they sacrificed their lives to save other babies," he wrote on the site.
