The blaze broke out on the sixth floor of 740 Park Avenue and is believed to have started in the apartment of 62-year-old billionaire financier Ezra Merkin, a former associate of imprisoned swindler Bernie Madoff, according to reports.
The entire building was ordered evacuated after the fire broke out. Smoke could be smelled on every floor.
What caused the fire was not immediately clear.
The building is known as the “Tower Of Power.” Among its famous past and current residents are Vera Wang, billionaire David Koch and Blackstone CEO Stephen A. Schwarzman.
