A 7-year-old girl has died after falling ill and fainting at a cheerleading camp in suburban Chicago, officials said.
Katherine “Kate” Babich became suddenly sick just before noon Monday and collapsed at the cheer camp for grades 2-5 at Maine South High School, school authorities said in a statement.

She was taken aside and was having trouble breathing. A trainer began performing CPR and paramedics were called, the Chicago Tribune reported.
EMTs also tried reviving her with a defibrillator, Park Ridge Deputy Police Chief Duane Mellema, but she was pronounced dead about an hour later at Advocate Lutheran Hospital in Park Ridge, where the child lived.
On Facebook, her mother, Jennifer Babich, thanked “everyone in our community for their support.”
An autopsy conducted Tuesday failed to determine a cause of death, and further testing is needed, the medical examiner’s office said.

“Kate is known as an inspired leader and a good friend to everyone in her class,” said School District 64 Supt. Laurie Heinz.
The child was going to enter the second grade in the upcoming school year.
