McClean, a senior at Columbia University, took off his clothes and climbed on top of a TKTS ticket booth in the June 30 incident.
“I saw myself as James Bond and I thought that people were out to get me,” he said. “I thought there was an evil order in the world.”
McClean says he believed the billboards were speaking directly to him. He thought an ad for Express clothing was instructing him to get naked, he said.
“The ‘express yourself’ ad was playing and I took that as a message to express myself by being completely nude,” he said.
The police tried their best to reason with him but he didn’t listen. “I just remember that I couldn't trust the police," he said. As if "they were out to get me."

He broke his arm and needed 13 stitches across his elbow.
McClean was taken to a psychiatric hospital and has spent the last three weeks in therapy. He says he speaking out now to bring attention to bipolar disorder.
