Jimmy Kimmel hosted the star-studded event.
Comedian Bill Murray was honored Sunday night with the Mark Twain Award for American Humor in a star-studded affair at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

“Bill Murray is [among] our greatest Americans," event host Jimmy Kimmel said. "I think Mark Twain would have been very fond of him.”
Murray could be seen squirming uncomfortably as he was heaped with praise.
When he arrived on the red carpet, the Ghostbusters star told reporters: “I'm not really excited to see anyone talk about me particularly, but I’d like just seeing them all because they’re funny."
He added: "They're really just a great bunch of people."
His good friend, David Letterman, was also at the event and spoke about the Broken Flowers star.
“One day our producers got a call from Bill Murray, who had been watching the show and he said he wanted to be a guest on the show — and oh my God — the clouds parted, the fog lifted and the sun shone and Bill came and what would be the first of 44 appearances on my show,” Letterman recalled.
The die-hard Chicago Cubs fan even threw out a pitch on the red carpet. His beloved Cubs are heading to the World Series for the first time since 1945.
“I'm confused, I feel like I’m in a wedding and there's a hurricane around me. Everything’s happening and it’s a blur. But I tried to wear something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. This right here is Chicago Cub blue, this is what we're really all about,” he told reporters.

Other guests included Miley Cyrus, Emma Stone, Jane Curtin, and Sigourney Weaver.
Weaver joked: “"I worked with Bill on two Ghostbusters movies and we did this love scene... Where the hell is my prize?"
