The gun was on a nightstand in the home.
A 4-year-old shot both her mother and herself after finding a loaded gun on a nightstand in her Indianapolis home, police said.
Police believe the child fired the weapon early Sunday morning, which pierced her cheek and then struck her mom in the back of the head.

However, both mother and daughter survived.
The child's condition was reportedly stable, while the mom's condition was unknown.
“When officers arrived, they came into contact with the father of the 4-year-old who stated that he and his fiancé were asleep when he was awakened by the sound of the gunshot,” the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said
Both mother and daughter were transported to the hospital.
The girl’s father reportedly told officers that his 2-year-old son was in the room when the gun went off but was not harmed.

Child Protective Services is said to be investigating the incident and the children remain in the custody of their dad.
