Hearing the disturbance, police say Charlotte's mother entered the bedroom, where the suspect shot her before turning the gun on himself.
When police arrived, they found Charlotte suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to Howard County General Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Suzanne Zaremba, 52, had suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound and was transported to Shock Trauma. She was treated and released.
The teen suspect remains in critical condition and his name has not been released. Police are not yet certain of his motive.
Another family member was home at the time of the shooting, but not injured. Police are continuing to investigate.
Meanwhile, Charlotte's loved ones are now left wondering, "why?"
"She was just really sweet, and a good friend,” Charlotte's friend Isabella Kushner told CBS.
