Andrews broke the news of her battle with cervical cancer in the latest issue of Sports Illustrated, saying she had undergone surgery

Every year 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 4,000 women die from it.

According to OBGYN Dr. Rebecca Brightman, there are lessons to be learned in Andrews’ ordeal.

"Women decrease the chances of developing cervical cancer by getting an HPV vaccine, practicing safe sex, and not smoking cigarettes," she said.

Most cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus or HPV, for which there is a vaccination.

"The vaccine is available for boys and girls, young adults — typically ages nine to 26," Dr. Brightman said.

It’s recommended that even boys get the HPV vaccine because they can pass on the virus.

Andrews, who is engaged to former NHL player Jarret Stol, will most likely still be able to have children, according to Dr. Brightman.

"As long as a woman has an intact uterus, they can carry on a pregnancy," Dr. Brightman said.
