"I hurt people. I'm a failure... I'm going to prison forever," Kevin Nelson, 32, told police crisis negotiators.
A Florida man was arrested in the killings of his wife and her teenage daughter after allegedly telling multiple people he'd murdered them before calling 911 to admit to what he had done.
Police on Monday received a 911 call from a man reporting shots fired in Sunrise, but the conversation quickly took a turn when the caller claimed responsibility for the incident.
“Sir, did you see the person with the gun?” asked the 911 operator.
“I’m the person with the gun,” the man said, giving the operator the names of two people who he claimed to have shot.
“Where are they now?” asked the 911 operator.
“Dead,” the man replied, before hanging up.
The call had been made using a phone registered to 32-year-old Kevin Nelson, who later told police crisis negotiators: “I hurt people. I’m a failure... I’m going to prison forever.”
After nearly five hours spent talking with the Sunrise Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation team, Nelson agreed to put his semi-automatic handgun down and emerged from his Balboa Street home to surrender at 3:30 p.m., a police report said.

Inside the home, police found 15-year-old Shanice Smith with a gunshot wound through her left cheek.
Her mother and Nelson’s wife, 40-year-old Karen Lyle, was found dead inside the master bathroom with a gunshot wound to her forehead.
Both bodies had been covered with blankets, police said.
It was not immediately clear when the killings occurred, but a neighbor told police he heard shots fired on Friday.
After hearing several shots first at 7:30 p.m. and then between five and seven more two hours later, the neighbor went outside with his own firearm to investigate and saw a man and a young boy leaving a nearby home.
The neighbor said he didn’t call 911 because he couldn’t tell where the gunshots came from.
Nelson’s sister told cops that he and his 8-year-old son came to her home Friday night, saying he had gotten into an argument with Lyle and killed her, the police report said.
She asked him if he was kidding, and Nelson said he was before leaving his son in her care, she told police.
Nelson allegedly texted and called Lyle’s brother and her friend on Monday saying he killed them. In text messages to Lyle’s friend, Nelson allegedly accused his wife of cheating on him.
“I’m in trouble. There are two dead people in there,” Nelson allegedly said during an interview with police after he was read his Miranda rights. “I can’t explain this. No matter what I say, it doesn’t matter. The facts are still there.”

Nelson invoked his right to counsel once he was taken to the police department, cops said.
He was charged with two counts of murder without premeditation. He appeared in court Tuesday, where he was ordered to remain jailed without bond.
Loved ones mourned the loss of Lyle and her daughter, whose deaths left the community stunned.
Anthony Cruz, a reggae singer, posted pictures of Smith on Facebook, writing: “I can’t believe they kill my one and only daughter in Ft. Lauderdale...”
Smith was a student at Piper High School, where she reportedly thrived in academics.
“She had a bright future ahead of her,” her grandfather, Courtney Smith, told WSVN-TV.
Lyle had been married to Nelson for less than a year, her brother, Christopher Lyle, wrote on Facebook.
"This is the saddest day in my life," Christopher Lyle wrote. "This domestic violence has to stop. Too many people are hurting from selfish behaviors. They say love hurts but it should not take lives."
