The woman, identified by authorities as "M.I.A.," delivered the babies via cesarean section at Recoletas Hospital in Burgos, Spain on Tuesday.
A 64-year-old woman has given birth to a set of twins described to be in “perfect health” — her second successful pregnancy in six years.
The woman, identified by authorities as “M.I.A.,” delivered the babies via cesarean section at Recoletas Hospital in Burgos, Spain on Tuesday, hospital officials said in a statement.
The twins—a boy who weighed 5.3 pounds and a girl who weighed 4.9 pounds—and their mother were said to be in good health, the Associated Press reported.
The delivery of the twins was a coordinated effort involving a medical team comprised of two gynecologists, two pediatricians, two midwives and “an entire nursing team,” officials said.
“This is an exceptional case not only in Castile and Leon, but also in Spain,” the hospital said.
The second-time mother had her first child at 58 years old, a girl whom she delivered at the same hospital in 2011, authorities said.

But her daughter has been in the custody of local authorities since 2014 because she allegedly did not attend school and was not properly cared for, Diario de Burgos newspaper reported.
Prior to her most recent pregnancy, the woman underwent in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in the United States, the hospital said.
“She showed up four months pregnant at the gates of our hospital and all we could do was face the situation and react,” Recoletas Hospital medical director Enrique Martin told the AP.
“The intervention was a success thanks to the coordinated work of a multidisciplinary team of the hospital,” Recoletas Hospital wrote.

Martin confirmed to the AP on Wednesday that the hospital was discussing with the regional government’s social services the woman’s ability and resources to take care of her twins.
Laws in Spain do not establish legal limits on the maximum age for assisted reproduction, but the Spanish Fertility Society discourages treatments for women over 50.
Though M.I.A.’s case is unusual, it is not without precedent.
In April, a woman in India believed to be at least 70 years old gave birth to a son after undergoing IVF treatment. The baby was the first child for Daljinder Kaur and her 79-year-old husband, Mohinder Singh Gill. The couple had been married for 46 years when they welcomed their first child.
