Both children were stabbed multiple times with a hunter's knife, according to authorities.
The girls’ father, Tillman Freeman III, 30, has been charged with two counts of murder.
Freeman was initially charged with child abuse and child endangerment on Friday after the girls were reported missing because he refused to give authorities his whereabouts, according to reports.
Fayetteville police said the mother of the children went to the hospital by herself and left the girls with Freeman. When she returned home, they were gone, reports said.
Police said that Freeman told his wife he dropped the kids off at an undisclosed location but she did not find them there so she called police.
Freeman reportedly accused his wife of cheating and claimed the children weren’t his and a fight ensued. His wife told police he then took the kids.
"He made allegations that she was maybe involved with someone, that the kids wasn't his," Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Petekin said. “That's the kind of verbiage that took place. A lot of rage, a lot of anger, and unfortunately the kids were the ones that paid for it."
