As Mary Kay Letourneau and Former Student Split, a History of Their Tumultuous Relationship

The affair began when Vili Fualaau was just 12 years old.

The scandalous marriage between Mary Kay Letourneau and her former pupil is over.

Her husband, 33-year-old Vili Fualaau, filed for a legal separation May 8 — nearly two weeks before their 12th wedding anniversary — claiming “our marital community ended.”

They do, however, continue to "live in the same household."

Letourneau began an affair with Fualaau in 1997, when he was just 12 years old and she was a sixth-grade teacher in Seattle.

Over the years, Inside Edition has followed the saga's twists and turns.

“I'm not a victim," he once told Inside Edition. "I’m not ashamed of being in love with Mary Kay.” 

When she became pregnant with their daughter Audrey, he was just 14 years old. She served seven years behind bars for child rape.

In 1999, Inside Edition was there when he saw his second daughter, Georgia, who was born behind bars, for the first time. Their daughters are now 19 and 18.

In 2005, a year after her release from prison, Letourneau and Fualaau were married.

They were last interviewed by Barbara Walters on their 10th wedding anniversary in 2015.

They are still making news today, 20 years after their saga began.
