Some hotel bathrooms are not properly cleaned between guests, an Inside Edition investigation has found.
To test whether staff at New York City hotels are adequately cleaning their bathrooms, Inside Edition checked into rooms and painted a harmless, washable fluorescent gel — only visible under a UV light — onto the toilet seat, sink counter and shower floor before checking out.

The team then checked into the same rooms under a different name for the following evening to see if the gel was still there.
During the investigation, which will air on Inside Edition Friday, the team found one midtown Manhattan hotel was the dirtiest. While the sink counter had been wiped down, the UV light was held above the toilet seat and shower and showed that the gel appeared to have never been touched by housekeeping.
“Ew!” said Inside Edition’s Chief Investigative Correspondent Lisa Guerrero. “That is gross. How would you like to stand in your bare feet in that?”
