Serena Williams was defeated in the Women’s Singles Final at the U.S. Open, but it’s her outburst to an umpire that has everyone talking. INSIDE EDITION has the details.
Samantha Stosur, the tennis sensation who beat Serena Williams at the U.S. Open reacts to her hateful outburst at the umpire that has the entire nation buzzing.
"It was definitely pretty difficult," said Stosur in a TV interview.
During the tennis match, Williams said to the umpire, "If you ever see me walking down the hall, look the other way, because you're out of control."
Stosur was taking on Williams in the women's final of the U.S. Open. Williams thought she had hit a winning shot and celebrated by yelling out, "Come on!"
The umpire called Williams's behavior "verbal interference," giving the point to Stosur. That's when Williams let loose with a stream of vitriol seldom heard in women's tennis.
"You're a hater, and you're unattractive inside," said Williams.
Ouch! Celebrities like Bradley Cooper, Alec Baldwin, Will Ferrell and Vanessa Williams looked on as the umpire gave Williams another violation, this time for verbal abuse, but that didn't stop her.
Williams continued by saying to the umpire, "Code violation for this? I express who I am. We're in America last I checked. Really don't even look at me. I promise you, don't look at me. Don't look my way."
At one point, Williams had this to say: "Aren't you the one that screwed me over last time here? Yeah, you are. Seriously you have it out for me. And I promise you that's not cool. That is totally not cool."
She was talking about her other infamous outburst in 2009, when she lashed out at a lineswoman who called her for a foot fault.
"I swear to God, I'm (blank) taking this ball and shoving it down your (blank) throat," shouted Williams in 2009.
After Sunday's match, Williams was gracious in defeat and praised her opponent.
"She played really, really well. She's a great player," said Williams after the match.
But later, at a press conference, she had this to say when asked if she regretted her behavior:
"I regret losing."
