INSIDE EDITION spoke to a woman who faced a medical disaster after she had her arms and legs amputated because she wanted a larger butt.
Every day is a battle for Apryl Brown. She lost all her limbs in a medical nightmare. Now, she struggles as she begins each day putting on prosthetics. She has begun re-learning the basics, like how to walk, and even how to use a spoon.
"It can be very challenging," said Brown.
And you won't believe how Brown ended up this way. It's all because she tried to improve her figure by getting butt injections.
Brown had always been teased about her flat bottom. And she dreamed of having the full figured look—the kind of curves that famous stars like Kim Kardashian and J-Lo have.
So when an acquaintance offered Brown black market silicone injections, she was thrilled.
"It was like, 'Oh my God, I've always wanted that,'" said Brown
But it turned out the silicone wasn't medical grade. It was the kind you'd buy at a hardware store. She says the silicone actually caused an infection that spread through her body. She spoke with INSIDE EDITION's Victoria Recaño.
Recaño asked, "When did you know that something was terribly wrong?"
"I started to get a lot of itching. I was itching a lot, then I would get these shooting pains," said Brown.
Incredibly, the single mom from Los Angeles was forced to have her legs and arms amputated.
"What was your first thought when you realized amputation was the only option?" Recaño asked.
"My first thought was, 'What the hell am I going to do? I am a hairstylist, fashion designer—everything I do is with my hands,'" Brown said.
Through the entire nightmare, Brown has remained positive, even in the hosptial.
Now the former cosmetologist is learning how to apply makeup again. Her inspiring story is featured in the November issue of Essence magazine. By sharing her story, Brown hopes to stop others from paying the ultimate price for vanity.
"I feel like a child. I am learning how to do everything over again," said Brown.
