The world woke to shocking news that double amputee Oscar Pistorius has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend in a fatal shooting. Was it a Valentine's surprise gone horribly awry? INSIDE EDITION reports.
There are shocking murder charges against the hero of the London Olympic games.
Oscar Pistorius, who made history as the first double amputee to run in the Olympics, is accused of shooting his model girlfriend to death in the early morning hours of Valentine's Day. Pistorius hid his face under his hooded sweatshirt as he left a police station.
Police were called to Pistorius' luxury home in a gated community in Pretoria, South Africa, at three in the morning. His girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp had been shot four times. She died at the scene.
Police representative Denise Beukes said at a press conference, "We can confirm that there was a shooting incident this morning at the home of the well-known Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius."
Pistorius was born without fibula bones in his lower legs. When he was 11 months old, doctors amputated below the knee.
Overcoming impossible odds, Pistorius campaigned to run in the Olympics. Last summer, the sight of Pistorius in 400 meter races earned worldwide applause.
At a track and field event with Team USA in New York, the athletes couldnt believe the news about the fallen idol.
"If you talk to anybody who knows Oscar, they'll say he's a very charming man, and he's outwardly one of the most friendly people you'd ever meet. To see this coming from South Africa, coming from his house, it just boggles my mind," said runner Nick Symmonds.
There is speculation that Pistorius' gorgeous girlfriend died in a Valentine's Day surprise that went horribly wrong. Just yesterday, she tweeted, "What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow?"
Did she show up unexpectedly, and did Pistorius open fire because he mistook her for a burglar? He is a gun enthusiast and tweeted this photo of himself at a range last year.
Neighbors reportedly heard arguing late last night, and police say they had been called to the home several times since 2011 to deal with "allegations of a domestic nature."
30-year-old Reeva is an FHM covergirl. INSIDE EDITION caught up with supermodel Brooklyn Decker at an event in New York City.
"It's a tragedy. It's awful," said Decker.
Just hours before her death, Reeva gushed about Valentine's Day, "It should be a day of love for everyone :) may it be blessed!"
No one could have imagined the holiday would end in her slaying, allegedly at the hands of the "Blade Runner."
