For the first time, Cate Edwards opens up about her father, John Edwards' affair with Rielle Hunter that changed his political life forever. INSIDE EDITION has the story.
Cate Edwards is opening up for the first time about her dad, John Edwards and his notorious affair with Rielle Hunter that brought down his political career.
In an interview with NBC's Savannah Guthrie, Guthrie asked, "What did you think when you first found out about what had happened with your dad and this affair? Did you first find out about it from him?"
"Yes, he told me. I guess he and my mom decided that was, you know, how it needed to be done. I was devastated and I was disappointed. I mean, these are my parents. I had grown up with a lot of love in my family, and it was hard to see them go through this," said Cate.
The 31-year-old attorney was by her father's side throughout his trial for using campaign funds to conceal the affair. He was found not guilty.
But, Cate says that doesn't mean she wasn't mad at him for cheating on her mother, the beloved Elizabeth Edwards who died in 2010.
Cate married her college sweetheart a year later. She is dismissive of Rielle Hunter.
Guthrie asked, "Rielle Hunter. Have you ever met her?"
"I have, a long time ago, early in the campaign."
Guthrie: "I'm sure she's not someone you spend a great deal of time thinking about."
"That's correct," Cate replied with a chuckle.
In her book, Hunter sparked outrage by calling Cate's mother "a witch on wheels," "crazy" and "venomous."
Guthrie asked, "Did that make you mad?"
"Oh yeah, of course. I mean, I just thought it was a poor choice, I guess," replied Cate.
