A shocking new twist in the JonBenet Ramsey murder case—it's now being revealed that a grand jury actually indicted John and Patsy Ramsey for being responsible for her death.
The 1999 indictment, just released on Friday, accuses the parents of accessory to murder in the first degree and child abuse resulting in death.
The district attorney in Boulder, Colorado refused to bring the Ramsey’s to trial because he didn't think he could get a conviction. In 2008, the Ramsey’s were exonerated after tests found DNA from an unknown person on JonBenet’s underwear, possibly from a cough or sneeze.
Author Larry Schiller wrote a best-selling book about the case, Perfect Murder, Perfect Town.
He said, “It seems what the grand jury said is that there was child abuse in the family. We don't know what the child abuse was and that this may have led to the murder or did lead to the murder.”
John Ramsey's attorney, Lin Wood, called the release of the indictment, "Fundamentally unfair to the Ramsey family and the system of justice. If you're going to make public what amounts to an accusation, let's see the evidence."
JonBenet was six years old when she was murdered on Christmas Day in 1996. She was found strangled and bludgeoned in the basement of her home. She had been sexually assaulted.
JonBenet would be 23 today. Nancy Grace commissioned an artist's rendering of what she would have looked like.
INSIDE EDITION's Paul Boyd asked Grace, "What do you see when you look at that rendering, Nancy?"
Grace said, “I see a life that could have been. A beautiful life and a little girl objectified by all those beauty pageants at such a young age. What friend or what family member or friend may have done this? It’s a stunning case and I don't think it will ever be prosecuted.”
