American beauty Katherine Webb finds herself in a social media firestorm today.
“The idea that I am a racist is absolutely stupid and it needs to stop,” she tweeted.
The Twitter war broke out immediately after Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston led his team to the nationally televised championship over Auburn on Monday night.
The jubilant Winston was interviewed on live TV moments after the big game. He said, "We will let us be bigger than the game. We were bigger than the game. Can't nobody be bigger than this game and we did that. We came out victorious."
Even before Winston’s interview was over, the mother of Katherine’s boyfriend, University of Alabama star quarterback A.J. McCarron, tweeted: “Am I listening to English?”
Dee Dee McCarron and Katherine are best buds. They famously sat side-by-side at last year's title game that vaulted Katherine into the national spotlight.
Many on Twitter branded Dee Dee's remark about Winston as inappropriate and even racist. She deleted it, adding: “Any1 that knows our family knows we r far from racist. My tweet was not in anyway meant that way. I sincerely apologize if it offended any1.”
But Katherine’s connection to her boyfriend's mother isn't what got her into hot water. It was a tweet from former Miss Alabama Teen USA Peyton Brown: “Jameis Winston needs to learn sign language to communicate because listening to him attempt to speak English is just insulting.” The tweet was "favorited" by Katherine, who now says she hit the favorite button by accident.
Katherine says she has no criticism of how Winston speaks, tweeting: “God loves all, so I love all.”
Etiquette coach Harriette Cole told INSIDE EDITION, "One of the biggest problems today with social media is that people react in the moment, write whatever their thoughts are, and send it out to the universe. That has never been a good idea."
