Could diamonds grown in a lab be a girl’s best friend? INSIDE EDITION spoke with the CEO of a company that is defying Mother Nature and creating their own real diamonds.
Say hello to your best friend—or is it? Introducing the lab-grown diamond. It is a real diamond, but grown in a laboratory instead of by Mother Nature.
Lisa Bissell is CEO of Pure Grown Diamonds and she spoke with INSIDE EDITION’s Diane McInerney.
McInerney asked, “Can the average person tell the difference?”
Bissell replied, "Absolutely not."
And the laboratory diamond grows just a bit faster than Mother Nature’s version.
McInerney asked, “How long does it take to grow a lab-made diamond?”
“About eight-12 weeks,” Bissell replied.
The timing couldn't be any worse for the high-end diamond industry because more than a quarter of all marriage proposals come during the holidays. Plus, lab-grown diamonds can cost 30 to 40% less than traditional diamonds.
So, will consumers go for the factory-made diamond rather than Mother Nature’s?
INSIDE EDITION asked shoppers in New York City’s Diamond District what they thought.
One woman said, "I'd take it, yeah, for fun."
A man said, "If I was going to buy a diamond, I would probably buy the real thing."
Another woman said, "If it comes from somebody I love, I will take any diamond."
Wonder what Marilyn Monroe would think? As she said in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.”
