The bright future for two Vanderbilt football players is over after spending their first night in jail on rape convictions. INSIDE EDITION reports.
The two Vanderbilt University ex-football players just convicted of raping a coed, spent their first night behind bars.
The verdict stated, "We the jury find the defendant Cory Lamont Batey guilty of aggravated rape."
Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey were kept in separate cells. Tuesday was Cory Batey's 21st birthday. It took just three hours for the Nashville jury to convict the two teammates.
"We find Mr. Vandenburg guilty of aggravated rape," the verdict continued.
As the verdicts were read, Brandon Vandenberg shook his head in disbelief. You could hear his parents shout out.
Cory Batey was stoic, but his family wept on hearing the pronouncement.
District Attorney Glenn Funk and Deputy DA Thomas Thurman spoke out.
INSIDE EDITION's Les Trent asked, "What was the victim's reaction to the verdict?"
Funk replied, "She had been strong and brave for a year-and-a-half as we took this case through the system and she felt like the fact that she had seen this case through its conclusion would hopefully empower other victims to be able to step forward and be brave enough to go forth themselves."
In what some are describing as a Hail Mary defense, Batey took the stand to apologize to the victim. He claimed, "I'm just sorry. I never intended on hurting anyone. I was extremely intoxicated."
