Gang Rape Outrage
Airdate: 10/30/2009
It's the shocking crime sparking national outrage. A 15-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital after she was brutally gang raped outside her high school homecoming dance. Police say witnesses just laughed. Instead of using their cell phones to call police, they used them to take pictures.
The attack happened on a remote part of the campus not far from the gymnasium where the dance was being held. Authorities say the attack was vicious, lasting two and a half hours, and there may have been as many as a dozen witnesses but not one of them did a thing to stop the attack or call for help.
"It shocks me that people watched it and did nothing," says Lorna McClellan, a teacher at Richmond High School outside Oakland, California, the same school featured in the 2005 movie
Coach Carter
starring Samuel L. Jackson.
Police say the gang rape took place after the victim left the homecoming dance to get a ride home from her father.
INSIDE EDITION spoke to Barbie and Cami Baker, sisters who attend Richmond High and are friends of the victim. They say she just wanted to have fun at the Homecoming dance, and she went to church every week.
Outside the gym, the girl encountered a group of young men milling around a picnic table. Police say they took turns raping the girl from 9:30 p.m. until midnight.
The young victim's friends are furious, not just with the attackers but also with the school and the lack of security. The entire area is in complete darkness at night and at least one report suggests that an area security camera doesn't even work.
Police have made six arrests so far. Most of the suspects are under 18.
19-year-old Manuel Ortega is charged as an adult and is being held on $1.2 million bail. The crime brings to mind the infamous 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese, who begged for her life in Queens, New York, as 38 witnesses did nothing to help.
Now another community wonders how something like this could have happened.
The 15-year-old victim has been released from the hospital. The school is accepting donations on her behalf.
Donations to the victim can be sent to Richmond High School, 1250 23rd St., Richmond, CA 94804. They should be made out to "Richmond High School Student Fund" with "Sex assault victim" on the memo line.
