President Attacked: Day Two Repercussions

Airdate: 12/16/2008

President Bush may have escaped the shoe attack unscathed, but his Press Secretary Dana Perino wasn't so lucky.

Perino was hit by a microphone in the confusion after the shoe assault and now has a black eye and a red mark on her forehead. She brushed off the incident with a joke, saying, "Shoe checkout policy begins tomorrow."

Meanwhile, the Secret Service has come forward defending its agents who faced criticism for not reacting quickly enough. A spokesman praised the agents for "acting with the proper balance of aggressiveness and restraint."

Iraqi security guards were less restrained. The brother of the shoe thrower claims the 29-year-old TV reporter has sustained a broken arm, broken ribs and cuts to his face while in custody.

All over the Arab world, the reporter is being hailed a hero to the dismay of most Americans.

The lawyer who represented Saddam Hussein has offered to defend the shoe thrower for free. The daughter of the leader of Libya has awarded him a medal of courage. Plus, a Saudi businessman has offered $10 million for just one of the now infamous shoes.

President Bush is being praised for his quick reflexes, including by his right hand man, Vice President Dick Cheney, who spoke to Good Morning America. "I thought the President handled it rather well. He had some good moves, the way he ducked and avoided the shoe."
