Missing Mom and Daughter

Airdate: 5/1/2009
To look at home videos of orthopedic surgeon Lynanne Jane Foster with her daughter, you'd never dream she was anything other than a loving mother.

But Foster is now on the FBI's Wanted list, accused of a heartbreaking crime: kidnapping her 7-year-old daughter and vanishing.

The girl's father hasn't heard from his beloved daughter since she left this message on his voicemail the day she disappeared: "Hello, Daddy. I really, really love you," said Camille.

"I can't be a whole person right now, because a piece of me is missing," says Galen Kaufman, the girl's father.

Kaufman, a veterinarian, married Foster in 1994.  She built a successful career as a surgeon and assistant professor.  They had a daughter they named Camille.

The couple later divorced, but Kaufman says he maintained an amicable relationship with his ex-wife and they shared custody of their little girl.

"Both Lynanne and I were kind of proud of ourselves because we were being responsible co-parents," Kaufman says.

Kaufman remarried and he and his new wife had a son.  But as Kaufman's new family was growing, he says, his ex-wife was sending him e-mails with strange ideas about the world around her.

"[The e-mails] were pretty odd.  [They contained] a lot of paranoia about Big Brother, things changing, world society is going to collapse," says Kaufman.

Those were not the only strange thoughts that Foster shared.  According to Kaufman, she believed the government was planning to implant microchips in children to track their movements.

In July of 2008, Camille and her mom were scheduled to leave on a two-week vacation, a trip that Kaufman had agreed to.

On the way to the airport, little Camille called her dad on the phone and told him they were leaving, and that she had a bunch of new clothes.

Kaufman hasn't seen or heard from his daughter since that day almost a year ago.  Authorities suspect Foster may have taken the little girl out of the country.

"We've got the State Department involved, we've got the FBI involved, and we've got some contacts with Interpol looking," says Lt. Louis Martinez of the Kendall County Sheriff's Department

Foster later wrote a letter to her parents saying, "Camille and I are fine.  I'm sorry and I hope you can understand.  My duty is to protect Camille."

Now, as Kaufman surveys Camille's room and wonders where in the world she is, he's tortured by his ex-wife's actions.

"I never imagined she was capable of this," he says.
