INSIDE EDITION's Rat Patrol Returns to the Nation's Capital

Airdate: 5/14/2009
President Obama and his family have been checking out popular neighborhood eateries all over Washington, D.C.

The national spotlight has been thrown on the places they've dined, but sometimes that spotlight can be harsh.  The INSIDE EDITION Rat Patrol decided to check out some of these restaurants, and the findings may be of interest to the First Family.

Our Nation's Capital has been inundated with rodents for decades, so it didn't come as much of a surprise when INSIDE EDITION found rats crawling right outside of and even inside some of the First Family's favorite restaurants.

The First Lady recently told reporters that she and her staff snuck out for lunch at a popular burger joint called Five Guys on Connecticut Avenue, not far from the White House.

For two straight nights, INSIDE EDITION's Rat Patrol found rats, lots of them, outside the restaurant's back door.

At another Five Guys location on Wisconsin Avenue in Georgetown, INSIDE EDITION spotted a rodent inside the restaurant, crawling all over sacks of raw potatoes kept right inside the front window.  Cameras also spotted another one scurrying across the floor behind the counter.

INSIDE EDITION's Rat Patrol saw them on two consecutive nights.  That's something the Obamas, and any other parent, would want to be aware of.  A Five Guys employee told INSIDE EDITION's producer that the Obama girls had dined at the Georgetown location.

INSIDE EDITION's Senior Investigative Correspondent Matt Meagher went back to talk to a manager, asking him, "Are you aware that you have a rat problem here?"

"We don't," said the manager.

He says the restaurant has ongoing pest control to prevent such problems.

One Five Guys customer INSIDE EDITION talked to says he loves their burgers but was grossed out by what we found.

"You eat here a lot?" asked Matt Meagher.
"Probably not anymore," the customer said.

When INSIDE EDITION told the Five Guys corporate headquarters about the findings, they promptly closed both locations and say the restaurants will not reopen until it is certain they are rodent-free.  In a statement, the company said, "The health and safety of our customers and employees is of primary importance at Five Guys."

President Obama and Vice President Biden recently lunched at another popular spot, Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, Virginia.

INSIDE EDITION's Rat Patrol didn't see any rodents the nights they visited, but the Virginia Department of Health found signs of them during the last two inspections, stating "mouse droppings were observed" on the floor of the food storage room.  The most recent inspection was conducted on May 6, just one day after Obama and Biden lunched there.

Caroline Smith DeWaal from the Center for Science in the Public Interest says the First Family and every other diner at these restaurants deserves better.  "Restaurants have a responsibility to control the rodents in their areas.  And that means controlling trash, making sure your dumpsters have rat proofing, [and] ensuring your restaurants don't have openings where rodents can easily enter," she said.

The Washington, D.C. Department of Health told INSIDE EDITION that Five Guys management took appropriate steps by closing the restaurants and that their inspectors will conduct a comprehensive inspection before they're permitted to reopen.
