Animals | Hair-Raising Animal Rescues

Late last year, Disability Law Colorado took the rare step of publicly reporting that they found dangerous and abusive conditions for children and teens at Southern Peaks Regional Treatment Center.

Disability Law is an advocate, empowered by federal laws, for the mentally and physically disabled. Southern Peaks provides intensive mental health services for children and teens who suffer severe psychiatric disabilities and trauma, according to its website.

The agency's report chronicled multiple inspections, and extensive interviews with children, parents and court-appointed guardians. It contains numerous allegations of excessive force being used against young patients, unsafe living conditions, and only sporadic mental health treatment.

At Southern Peaks, children reported being told, “You’re a piece of crap.” One boy said he was told to “go kill myself.”

Parents and advocates say Southern Peaks runs like a prison instead of a treatment center.

"Children have gone as far as cutting themselves, drinking cleaning fluid and hanging themselves from trees" to get out of Southern Peaks, the report says.

Mother Amberlee Collazo is speaking out after her 12-year-old son was allegedly kidnapped by another mom. Police allege that Shannon Tufuga made Collazo's son Kristopher get into her vehicle, drove him to the home and told him to apologize to her child for bullying her at school. Two Maryland State Troopers are being hailed as heroes for saving a choking baby during a called on March 21. The swift actions of Trooper Taylor Hersh and Corporal Jonathan Soultzfus from MDSP's Prince Frederick Barrack, saved the child after one of the troopers grabs the baby from the mother's hands and gave it the Heimlich maneuver and within seconds the baby boy can be seen moving and breathing. It is unknown what caused the baby to choke, but the bodycam footage of the rescue was put on social media by the Maryland State Police.

Tiffany Edens was only 13 when she was attacked by a man known as the "jogger rapist," a serial rapist who got his nickname because he would jog through neighborhoods looking for victims. Although Richard Gillmore admitted he assaulted at least nine women, he was released from an Oregon prison after 36 years. Edens and her supporters decided to spread the word about Gillmore's past with flyers about his crimes and his mugshot after learning he was moving to Portland.

A 70-year-old woman was enjoying a morning stroll with her dog when an armed robber held her at gunpoint. The thief even pointed the gun at the woman's dog before grabbing her purse and running off. The incident happened in the upscale Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Diana Dejacimo says the robber rifled through her bag before tossing it on the street. It turned out the thief used her key fob to steal her car.

The new footage shows missing 11-year-old girl Madalina Cojocari getting off a school bus at 4:59 p.m. on November 21. However, cops say her parents did not report her missing until December 15, nearly 22 days later. Now, Madalina’s mom and her stepfather were arrested and charged with failure to report a missing child.
