"I'm a little disappointed that there wasn't a cake," said the President.
The laughs came at the end of a speech to labor leaders.
The President is expected to have a birthday dinner with friends in his hometown, Chicago, and spend the night at his own house there.
The President is turning 49 without his family. The first lady and daughter Sasha are on a trip to Spain. They arrived in the resort town of Marbella on Wednesday. Malia is at sleepaway camp.
