A nine-year-old batboy has died after he was accidentally hit in the head during a National Baseball Congress World Series game this weekend.

The team's general manager, Mike Carlile, confirmed the boy's death late on Sunday night.

The youngster was wearing a helmet, as is mandatory, when he was accidentally hit by one of the players as he went to retrieve a bat, team president Nathan McCaffrey said. The boy took a few steps back before falling.
Home-plate umpire Mark Goldfeder, a longtime paramedic, treated Kaiser until an ambulance arrived.

Players paid tribute to the little boy after news of his tragic death.
"Kaiser, you were a little brother I never had," Kadon Simmons wrote on Instagram. "No person or team could ask for a better bat boy."
Cale O'Donnell added on Twitter: "Pleasure being around this young man for a short time. Heaven gained an angel today. Rest in Peace Kaiser."
Kaiser was about to start the fourth grade, The Wichita Eagle reported. He was the son of a cousin of Bee Jays' general manager Mark Carlile.

The player involved in Saturday's incident has not been identified.
The team played a game against the San Diego Waves on Sunday, winning 8-0.
