David Muir Prepares to Speak to The Pope for Historic TV Special

The Pope will appear in a 20/20 Special on Friday night.

David Muir is talking to INSIDE EDITION about his unique television special "Pope Francis and the People."

During the satellite interview, which will air on ABC at 10pm Friday, the Pope was transmitted to various parts of the country where he spoke to people living on Skid Row in Los Angeles, and immigrants inside the Sacred Heart Catholic Church near the U.S. / Mexican border.

This was a way for Pope Francis to connect with people in places he wanted to visit, but is unable to during his highly anticipated trip to America.

He arrives in the U.S for the first time on September 22 for a five day visit where he will visit Washington, D.C., New York & Philadelphia.

The 20/20 special marks a milestone for Muir. It's his one year anniversary as the anchor of World News Tonight, having taken over from that broadcast legend, Diane Sawyer.

Muir said: “The first year has been extraordinary. What an honor to sit at this desk every night and to leave this desk to go around the world. What a way to end the year with the Pope!”

Last week, it emerged that The Pope spoke, via satellite, to students at a Catholic high school in Chicago. Among the audience members, 17-year-old Valerie Herrera was brought to tears when she told the Pope she'd been bullied her entire life because she suffers from the skin disease vitiligo.

She says music has helped her through tough times.

Muir, like many, was stunned with what the Pope had said to the girl. He shared his emotions: “She finishes her story, tears begin to dry, he began speaking in English and he asks ‘can you sing a song?’”

What followed was a remarkable exchange.

Muir said: “There was a long, long silence. Everybody wondering, including the Pope, ‘Will she do it? Can she do it?’”

The Pope told her to “Be courageous” and the girl began to sing. Watch the clip above to see her incredible performance.
