Little Dominic Dickinson was found dead after he consumed heroin and fentanyl, a powerful painkiller, officials said.
The parents of a baby boy who died after ingesting heroin were indicted in the child’s death, officials said.
A grand jury in Columbus, Ohio indicted Denise Dickinson, 32, and Kyle Black, 29, in the death of their 11-month-old son, Dominic Dickinson, who was found dead in their Columbus home in May, Franklin County prosecutor Ron O’Brien told INSIDE EDITION.
Authorities initially believed Dominic may have died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) as he was discovered in a playpen surrounded by blankets by paramedics responding to a call of a child not breathing, the Columbus Dispatch reported. But the child was later found to have ingested heroin and fentanyl, a powerful painkiller, O’Brien said, noting that drug paraphernalia was found in the home.

O’Brien said that while authorities cannot prove what led to the child’s fatal consumption, it is believed the tots may have seen drugs that were in their reach and believed the items were something safe to eat.
“With heroin, what’s going on is people are either being careless or while under the influence, exposing very young children to this,” O’Brien said.

Both Dickinson and Black face charges of involuntary manslaughter and child endangering, O’Brien said. They face up to 11 years in prison if found guilty, he said.
