Woman Whose Baby Was Cut From Her Womb Recalls How She Sang to The Child's Lifeless Body

Michelle Wilkins told INSIDE EDITION about the first and last time she ever held her child.

A woman whose unborn daughter was cut from her womb is speaking out about the moment she held her child's lifeless body for the first - and last - time.

Earlier this week, a Colorado jury convicted 35-year-old Dynel Lane of attacking Michelle Wilkins and leaving her to die in a bloody basement last year.

Speaking to INSIDE EDITION, Wilkins, 27, recalled waking up in the hospital to discover that her daughter, whom she named Aurora, had died. The nurses brought her the child's body.

"I held her, I sang to her, I read to her and it was really bittersweet," she told IE.

She recalled how she sang "the same song my mother sang to me, 'You are My Sunshine.'"

Last year, Lane lured Wilkins, who was seven months pregnant, to her house with a Craigslist ad claiming she was giving away free maternity clothes. Prosecutors say Lane was pretending to be pregnant and even lied to friends, her boyfriend and family.

Prosecutor Stan Garnett told IE: “She had apparently been putting on weight to look pregnant. There had been a baby shower by her friends and family. It was clearly an obsession for her."

In court, WIlkins described how Lane directed her to go into the basement to look at the maternity clothes. Without warning, the assailant reached for a bottle.

“She picked it up and she smashed it over my head," Wilkins told the court. "That's when I held it up over my head. I said: ‘I don't know why you're doing this. I love you.’ And she said: ‘If you love me you'll let me do this.’ And then she stabbed it into my neck."

Lane beat her with a lamp, stabbed her in the throat, slashed her stomach open and choked her into unconsciousness.

Michelle slipped in and out of consciousness as her attacker sliced her belly open. Then Lane fled with the baby, leaving Wilkins close to death. Somehow she managed to call 911.

“The only thing that I really felt consistently in the wake of all of this is just complete disbelief and complete shock that someone could do that and that I would be the victim of that,” Wilkins told IE.

Lane took the baby to the emergency room. There, she told doctors that she was the mother and had just suffered a miscarriage.

But Lane was arrested. This week, a jury found her guilty on all charges, including attempted murder. She will be sentenced in April.

After the verdict, Wilkins told reporters that it felt like a "triumph for Aurora."

And while she has forgiven her attacker, she said she knows "I may never get any real answers or an explanation from her."
