Actress Doris Roberts, Best Known For TV's 'Everybody Loves Raymond,' Dies At Age 90

Actress Doris Roberts, best known for playing the meddling mom on 'Everybody Loves Raymond,' has died at age 90.

Actress Doris Roberts, who played the crotchety mother in the hit television series "Everybody Loves Raymond," has died in Los Angeles. She was 90.

Roberts was a 20-year veteran of Broadway before she began appearing in steady character roles on television in the 1970s. She was a regular on the syndicated sitcom "Mary Hartman Mary Hartman" and on ABC's "Angie."

She came into her own as a comedienne on "Everybody Loves Raymond," playing the manipulative, brassy Marie Barone from 1996 to 2005. She was nominated seven times for her role as Ray Ramono's meddling mother in the beloved program and took home four best-supporting actress Emmys.

Series creator Phil Rosenthal posted his condolences on Twitter, as did co-star Patricia Heaton, who played her daughter-in-law, Debra.

She died Sunday, according to website TMZ, which first reported her death. No cause of death was given. 

She also won an Emmy for her 1982 guest appearance on "St. Elsewhere."

She also appeared in movies, including "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation,"  "Little Murders," "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three," and "A Lovely Way to Die."

She is survived by her son, Michael Cannata. Funeral arrangements are pending.
