Sen. Ted Cruz Drops Out of GOP Race, Leaving Donald Trump The Presumptive Nominee

Ted Cruz, after losing Tuesday's Indiana primary, announced he was suspending his presidential campaign.

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz dropped out of the 2016 presidential race Tuesday night, leaving bombastic billionaire Donald Trump as the party's presumptive nominee for the White House.

His announcement followed an overwhelming loss to Trump in Tuesday's Indiana primary.

"I said I would continue on as long as there is a viable path to victory," Cruz told a room of supporters. "Tonight, I'm sorry to say, it appears that path has been foreclosed. Together we left it all on the field in Indiana. We gave it everything we got, but the voters chose another path."

Trump, in a speech later Tuesday night, called Cruz "one hell of a competitor. He has an amazing future," Trump said. From here on out, Trump said, "We're going after Hillary Clinton."

Cruz had made several last-minute efforts to inflate his campaign, including naming former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina as his running mate. She sang to his daughters during a press conference.

Earlier Tuesday, on what turned out to be his last day on the campaign trail, Cruz had blasted Trump, calling him a "pathological liar," "a serial philanderer," and a "narcissist."

Trump had claimed Cruz's father, Rafael Cruz, had been seen with Lee Harvey Oswald around the time of President John F. Kennedy's assassination. Cruz vehemently denied that claim and unloaded on Trump.

"This morning, Donald Trump went on national television and attacked my father," Cruz said Tuesday. Donald Trump alleges that my dad was involved in assassinating JFK. Now let's be clear, this is nuts. This is not a reasonable position.
