The nation was captivated last year when baby Gabriel went missing the day after Christmas. Now, his mother makes an apparent confession to her ex-boyfriend, but some are questioning her statements. INSIDE EDITION has the latest.
Awful words from the mother of missing baby Gabriel.
"Gabriel's in a dumpster. I suffocated him."
The apparent confession by Elizabeth Johnson comes in a just-released phone conversation with her estranged boyfriend Logan McQuearie, baby Gabriel's father.
McQuearie asked on the call, "Where are you and where is Gabriel?"
"Gabriel's in a dumpster," replied Johnson.
"No, he's not," said McQuearie.
Baby Gabriel was last seen the day after Christmas 2009 when his mom took him on a bizarre cross country trip. She claimed she left him with complete strangers in a park in San Antonio, Texas before continuing on alone to Miami Beach.
In the just released call, Gabriel's mom describes in detail how she killed her son, saying, "You made me do this."
McQuearie said, 'You did not hurt Gabriel."
Johnson replied, "Yes, I did. I suffocated him, then I put him in a diaper bag and I put him in a trash can."
She blames her ex for her terrible deed, saying, "You want to talk to girls, that's the price you pay. Don't you care about me? All you care about is Gabriel and he's gone now. You know what I'm capable of and you pushed me anyway. You destroyed my life," said Johnson.
INSIDE EDITION's Paul Boyd spoke with Elizabeth Johnson's attorney, saying, "People are going to listen to this audio tape and they're going to think they're hearing a murder confession."
Johnson's attorney said, "Desperate people say desperate things. They try and hurt each other, and that's what happened here. She was trying to hurt him."
No trace of the boy has been found. His mother remains in jail charged with kidnapping, but not murder because the body has not been found.
The question now is, did Johnson really kill her son? Or is her confession a sick fantasy, dreamed up to torture her ex?
