Life changed for Alfonso Hoffman of Los Angeles when he found lumps on his neck earlier this year. He was soon diagnosed with leukemia, ABC13 reported.
But before he begins his three-year course of treatment later this week, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department decided to give the boy a send-off to remember.
“We are always glad to have the opportunity to make even one kid smile," Acting Transit Division Chief Commander Michael Claus said in a statement. "[It's] something that will stay with Alfonso and his family for a long time."
Alfonso said he's always dreamed of a career in law enforcement, inspired by his uncle Mike Garcia, who serves with the Monrovia Police Department, CBS Los Angeles reported.
"I want to be a K9 officer because I like handling with dogs," Alfonso said.
For the rest of the day, that's exactly what he did.
After being sworn in at the Metro Transit Authority Headquarters downtown, he was given a monogrammed sheriff's vest and taken to a secure facility where he was able to interact with K9 officers, Xxara and Hhutton, as if they were actually his partners.
"I'd like to say thank you," Alfonso said after his day, through tears. "It's a mad honor."
His mom added, "This is his passion. I know one day he's going to be a K9 officer."

With the good memories from being sworn in as a K9 deputy for the day, he begins his grueling treatment for leukemia. According to a Facebook post by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the family anticipates that his first year of treatment will be the most intense.
"Alfonso, we wish you wellness, happiness and a quick recovery! Thank you for being our honorary K9 Deputy for a Day!" The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department wrote on Facebook.
