Grey's Animosity: Petition Demands Firing of Jesse Williams From Show After BET Awards Speech

'Grey's Anatomy' creator Shonda Rhimes has come to her star's defense amid the uproar.

The speech made by “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams at the BET Awards last week is still making headlines.

His impassioned support of the Black Lives Matter movement drew raves from many but also created backlash that has coalesced into a Change.org petition demanding he be fired from the hit TV show.

"If this was a white person making the same speech about an African-American, they would have been fired and globally chastised, as they should be, but there have been no consequences to Williams' actions," the petition said.

"There's been no companies making a stand against his racist remarks and no swift action condemning his negative attitude."

The online petition has nearly 10,000 signatures.

In his speech late last month, the actor cited the controversial deaths of Tamir Rice and Eric Garner and accused society of marginalizing black Americans.

"We've been floating this country on credit for centuries, and we're done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil,” he said.
