Steve Worthington told InsideEdition.com that he was on vacation at Daytona Beach with his girlfriend, Allison Crowe, and his 12-year-old daughter when he said he heard a man tell the girl, "You have a nice a**."
In an interview with WKMG, Worthington said, "He was clearly drunk."
Worthington then retorted, before pushing the man away.
Cops said the man, John Debow, then allegedly pulled out a switchblade from his backpack, and in mid-struggle, Worthington's arm was caught in the blade. Debow then fell on his own knife, slashing himself in the arm, Worthington told InsideEdition.com.
"The guy passed out from loss of blood," Worthington said. "He threw the knife away and collapsed on the ground."
Police soon arrived on the scene arrested Debow on aggravated battery, before loading Worthington in an ambulance to treat his wounds.
Despite the blood and distress, Debow seemed to have something else on his mind.
"I planned to propose on the beach," he later told InsideEdition.com. He said he wanted to write it in the sand, and drop down to one knee in front of family members for a romantic proposal.
But, as his girlfriend fretted over his well-being, Worthington thought, "This is the perfect opportunity. There's never going to be a greater proposal story than this.
"I have a weird sense of humor," he joked.
As firemen hosed blood off the scene, Worthington said he pretended to get dizzy and stumble as he got out of the ambulance.
As Crowe ran to his side to help him back to his feet, he pulled out the ring, and popped the question.
"She said yes," Worthington said. "She said it was classic me. She was waiting for it all to be an act."

Now, they're planning to tie the knot the weekend after Thanksgiving.
Debow, on the other hand, posted $25,000 bail and was released the following day. He has since pleaded not guilty to the incident and will be appearing in court later this month.
