As Family of JonBenet Ramsey Speaks Out About Her Murder, Investigators Continue to Work Case

Boulder Police Chief Greg Testa released a video expressing the department's dedication to the open case, which he said has always been a priority.

Police investigating the murder of JonBenét Ramsey have reassured the public that they are diligently working on the nearly 20-year-old case to identify her killer and bring that person to justice.

Boulder Police Chief Greg Testa released a video Thursday expressing the department’s dedication to the open case, which he said has been a continued priority for their major crimes unit.

“The Boulder Police Department is committed to finding justice for JonBenét, through a methodical and comprehensive investigation while looking at all aspects of the case,” he said.

Though Testa said authorities would not discuss or release details or evidence in the investigation, he noted officials have processed more than 1,500 pieces of evidence, including the analysis of more than 200 DNA samples.

In their quest to solve the case, investigators have also sorted through more than 20,000 tips, letters and emails, traveled to more than 18 states throughout the country and interviewed or spoken to more than 1,000 people, Testa said.

Two investigators are assigned to the case.

“We have not and will not give up. We remain focused on this investigation and finding justice for JonBenet,” he continued.

Testa’s reassurance comes as the Ramsey family speaks out about the murder of little JonBenét, who was 6 when she was found beaten and strangled to death in the basement of her home the day after Christmas 1996.

The child beauty queen was reported missing when her family said they found a ransom note earlier that day. Her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, and her 9-year-old brother, Burke, were initially looked at under an “umbrella of suspicion.”

“I know people think I did it, that my parents did it,” Burke Ramsey, now 29, told Dr. Phil McGraw in an exclusive sit-down set to air September 12. “I know that we were suspects.”

The Ramsey family denied having anything to do with JonBenét’s death and were cleared as suspects in 2008, two years after Patsy Ramsey died following a 13-year battle with ovarian cancer.

DNA tests — new at the time — that looked at skin cells left at the murder scene pointed to an outsider.

“That genetic profile belongs to a male and does not belong to anyone in the Ramsey family,” the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement at the time. “The unexplained third party DNA on the clothing of the victim is very significant and powerful evidence.”

Original investigators will team up with experts to look at evidence using new technology and forensics in a six-hour, three-part docuseries, “The Case of JonBenét Ramsey,” airing later this month on CBS.

They will also rebuild the crime scene, conduct interviews and offer new theories.
