Revisiting JonBenet's Home: How New Owner Brightened the House With a Dark Past

Carol Schuller Milner is intent on undoing the house's grim past.

The Colorado home where little JonBenet Ramsey was found viciously murdered in December 1996 has been a source of fascination for 20 years, and its interior has remained largely unseen.

Carol Schuller Milner, the daughter of televangelist Robert Schuller, bought the Boulder house in 2004.

"It is a wonderful place to live, it is home," she told Inside Edition.

But at first, she was extremely reluctant to buy it.

“I got out to the car and thought: ‘Are we're really doing this? Really? We are gonna do this? Come on, Carol. I was reticent. The minute we walked through the door my breath was taken away,'" she said.

She says she was determined to breathe new life into the house.

“This has become a dark monument, this thing that was just sitting there, just a constant reminder of something horrible that happened and I’m just a believer in undoing stuff like that,” she said.

Milner then began the painstaking work of remodeling the home from top to bottom.

The basement, where JonBenet's body was found, was originally dark with small rooms. But Milner transformed it into a family room with an open space.

She says the neighbors appreciated her efforts to breathe new life into the home.

"We had people come up to us and say there was so much happiness in the home,” she said. “This means so much not only it’s so great you bought it and that you have kids and that there will be happiness there again and life there."

The 11,000-square-foot house was built in 1927. The Milner’s purchased the home for $1 million and have tried to put the home up for sale numerous times, most recently in 2014, but no one has purchased the property.
