7 Manatees - Stranded After Hurricane Hermine - Rescued From Golf Course Pond

Hurricane Hermine left seven manatees trapped on a golf course pond in Florida.

It was quite the water hazard at a Florida golf course when seven manatees became stranded in the aftermath of Hurricane Hermine.

The manatees were pushed into the golf course pond of a local hotel by floodwaters and were there for 13 days before they finally made it home Thursday.

Thanks to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), who made sure the animals weren't in distress before coming up with a release plan, and more than 100 volunteers, the animals made it back to the nearby Kings Bay.

Kayaks were used to drive the manatees into nets before they were taken out of the pond and each checked for any injuries.

The manatees included two calves, four adults, and one juvenile, according to the FWC.

A calf and his mother were the first two rescued and the mother weighed in at a whopping 1,840 pounds.

“We made sure the calves were released with their mothers because we wanted to make sure they would go together,” said Kelly Richmond of the FWC.

The whole ordeal took about 10 hours.

“It’s always good to see the manatees back in their natural environment,” said Kelly Richmond.
