Gage was transferred to the hospital but later died, police said.
Police said the driver of the truck was a 69-year-old woman.
Gage’s grandmother, Margaret Carter, told Detroit News that the dog escaped when a family friend opened the front door. She told the paper that the dog usually runs around the yard, but this time he ran into the street.
"My grandson just kept following him and I guess he just stepped off the curb and the car got both of them," said Carter. "I was beside myself. I still can't believe it, he's only 10.”
Carter said Gage was someone everyone wanted to be around.
"He was such a loving kid, always having fun. He used to come here a lot and stay on the weekends with his little brother," Carter said.
Though she said that their family is trying to remember the good times, the heartache is just too much to bear, she told the station.

"The minute his name is mentioned, everybody breaks down," Carter said. “I just keep thinking it's a bad dream, but I know it's not."
The family has set up a GoFundMe account for funeral expenses.
