The shooting took place outside a Macy’s department store at Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing, a community in southern New Jersey.
The 20-year-old man was shot multiple times at about 1 a.m. and died at the scene, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office stated in a press release.
The man’s 26-year-old brother also sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. The Clayton man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently in stable condition.
Police did not immediately release the identity of the victims, or the motive behind the shooting.
Also on the scene were dozens of bullet shell casings, and a silver SUV with bullet holes, which officials towed away at around 7 a.m. Friday.
The Macy’s was open at the time of the shooting. The mall itself closed at midnight, and reopened at 6 a.m. for bargain-hunting shoppers.

“It’s a tragedy,” one shopper said in an interview with CBS Philadelphia. “It’s very scary, you know, you’re starting off the holiday season, and you’re excited about the upcoming times with family, and now there’s going to be families who are missing people and their holidays will never be the same.”
The Hamilton Mall continues to be open for shoppers.
