Police say there was a gun in the room, which the boy is believed to have used to shoot himself before 8:30 a.m.
Paramedics did everything they could for the boy, but he died at the scene, police said.
A spokesman with the Clearwater Police Department called it "a tragedy in all respects" and said the boy's death remains under investigation.

Detectives now want to know how the firearm was stored and how the boy was able to find it.
"There are many angles that we'll have to look at, we're currently still speaking with the family that has been very cooperative and are in a great deal of distress as you can imagine," the spokesman said.
