His marriage to Moore was his only wedding and her third. They met in 1980 when the Dick Van Dyke Show star was 45 and the 30-year-old cardiologist was treating her mother. They married two years later.
"After I’d seen her mom the second time, I said to Mary, 'If there's an emergency, just get in touch with me," Levine told People magazine in 1984. "And Mary said, 'Does acute loneliness count?' And I said, 'Yes.'"
The actress has credited him for keeping her spirits up as she struggled with alcohol and diabetes over the years.
"My husband has always been very good at getting me out of myself when I get down and depressed and all of that -- never seriously," she once confessed to Entertainment Tonight. "So, I am basically a very happy person."
Moore's passing is still sending shockwaves throughout Hollywood.
Valerie Harper who starred in the Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spinoff, Rhoda, has broken her silence about the death her longtime friend.
On Thursday, Harper tweeted: “To The World I'll miss you "Mair." I will always be your co-pilot. I will always love you, darling Mary Tyler Moore.

Her tribute to her late friend continued on Facebook Thursday as she wrote: “Working together we knew each other so well we could anticipate each other's moods, ever ready to engage and KNOW there would be an appropriate response from Mary. I will always feel privileged and honored with the amount of quality time I was able to spend with Mary.”
As Moore entered a Connecticut hospital last week, Dr. Levine notified Harper to let her know the news was grim.
Moore died of cardiac arrest Tuesday at the hospital while surrounded by friends and family.
